Review: Beastly

Beastly by Alex Flinn.
Published in 2007 by HarperTeen
I bought this book at Borders.
I am so excited about this review. This is the best book that I have read in awhile, and it counts towards the Chicklitplus Book Challenge. Oh, yes!!
This novel is a modernized retelling of the classic Beauty and the Beast, which I love. I’ve been sick this week and I’ve made Matt what the Disney movie with me at least 5 times. All three versions.
Back to the book. I’ve read reviews of this book lately. All were positive. It’s part of what made me buy the book. I was expecting to like the book, but I didn’t expect to be so blown away.
It was so completely charming. Even though you can guess how it ends, unless you’ve never seen or heard of Beauty and the Beast, it’s a delight. And the little twist of the ending with Will is just wonderful. Although, I do have to wonder, if they were juniors in the beginning of the book, why is Sloane still there 3-4 years later? But it’s more of a huh rather than a discredit.
Just before each new part of the book there is a mini cyberchat transcript for teens that had been transfigured. At first I didn’t know how I felt about this, but it definitely grew on me. Especially when I realized that the leader of this chat was Mr. Anderson. Touche.
This book is also going to be made into a movie, due for release in March. I’m actually looking forward to it. There is one obvious change between the book and the movie so far and I like it. Rather than being transformed into a beast, the main character has scaring and tattoos that resemble rose vines, thorns etc. I love that. That’s maybe the first time I approved of a change in a movie adaption.
I don’t have any complaints with the novel. In fact, I want to read more of Alex Flinn’s novels. I will definitely be seeing this movie in theaters as well.
I give this one 5 dog eared pages.
