453 pages
Genres: YA, fantasy, paranormal
Synopsis via Goodreads: A murderer is loose in New York City ...
... and the victims are Downworlder children. Clary Fray and her fellow Shadowhunters have a strong suspicion that Valentine, Clary's father, may be behind the killings. But if he is the murderer, then what's his true motive? To make matters worse, the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, has been stolen, and the mysterious Inquisitor has arrived to investigate, with his eyes vigilantly targeted on Clary's brother, Jace.
Clary will need to face some terrifying demons and even more terrifying family decisions. No one said that the life of a Shadowhunter would be easy.
Spoiler Alert highlight to read: The brother/sister thing is still beyond gross but I’m still hoping that Valentine lied, which has amazing odds at this point.
I am becoming obsessed with this series. I can’t help it; it’s paranormal fantasy in a way that is completely unexpected. The characters are great for the most part but the storyline is what has drawn me in.
I love the characters Jace and Luke, but some of the other characters drive me to distraction. Although I do kind of feel bad for wishing bad things would happen to Simon after reading this book. I still don’t like him, but I think that his character has now suffered enough. Now I mostly wish he’d just quietly slip away to elsewhere. I’m also having a lot of issues with the character of Clary. I want to like her so badly, but SHE NEVER LISTENS…to anyone! She’s new to this whole shadowhunter world and tons of people that she knows have been a part of it their whole lives, but whenever they try to steer her in the right direction, or tell her not to do something for her own safety/well-being, if it’s not what she wants to do, she doesn’t listen. It really gets on my nerves. I kind of want to smack her sometimes.

I do have high hopes for how I want some plots to be resolved and even though I do have some problems with the book, I really do like it and the series in general. I would recommend it for sure.
