When I first read American Gods in 2006, it was at
the suggestion of a close friend who “doesn’t read”. I had no idea who Neil
Gaiman was, but was intrigued by this book that my friend loved. I devoured it
in a day. Since this is a reread for me, I had forgotten the rather crass,
sexual parts of the book, so I hope none of you reading with me were offended
by those parts. Whoopsie.
I have always kind of liked Shadow. He has a past
that’s a bit dark, but you know that it isn’t the whole story. It’s that bit of
mystery about him that kept me reading. Mr. Wednesday has always been sketchy
to me. I’m not sure I like him, but I know I shouldn’t trust him. Laura is more
complex. I hate what she did to her husband, but it’s still clear that she loves
him and that wins me over.
I love all the little side stories dealing with the
gods. They’re really interesting and it’s like you’re getting all these
different books in one. My favorite was the one that took place in the 1700’s.
I loved that the character was very superstitious. I am of Irish decent and my
grandparents still hold true to the legends of leprechauns, faeries, and
banshees.

Ugh, Laura. The way Shadow describes her in the very beginning makes me like her so much, and then you find out that she sucks. I'll probably never really warm up to her. Dammit. The little story of them first meeting was so sweet and a little romantic.
ReplyDeleteI agree. And Shadow goes on about how much he loves her and how he's going to be a better man for her...it breaks my heart.
DeleteI hear so much about Neil and have always wondered if I should read his work, I'm sure your answer would be YES!
ReplyDeleteHaha you guessed correctly. He has some great YA works that I think are great. Coraline or The Graveyard Book would be great place to start.
DeleteLoliQ says: So far I'm really enjoying the book though I agree that it's kind of wierd and complex. Here are my comments on section one
