The Graveyard Book Post 3 Discussion

This post covers chapters five and six as well as the interlude of The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman.  There may be spoilers, so please don’t read this post unless you’ve read those chapters.
I really liked the chapter of Danse Macabre, it's one of my favorite in the book. It always reminds me of the wedding scene of Tim Burton's The Corpse Bride where the living and the dead reunite. If it was possible, I would would dance the Macabre. It would be really fun I think, plus it would be lovely to reunite with some of my departed loved ones.

I don't know why those in the graveyard are so secretive about it when it's such a big deal. It's not like Bod won't find out all about the dance anyway. I do think that the flowers bloom because of Bod's presence in the Graveyard though. It makes me wonder why under what circumstances they would have bloomed under before.

It really bothers me that the Man Jack has minions. As if one of them wasn't bad enough. I've read the book several times and still don't understand why he's running out of time. Even when Bod is grown he'll have to leave the graveyard. Sometimes I think that the Man Jack has Silas-like abilities but that they are some how limited.

I love that Bod is put into school, but I loathe the bullies that he has to deal with. However, due to Bod's altercation with the police you can see where some of the kids learn that behavior. I'm glad that the cop and the girl got in trouble for the fact that they abuser their connections. I really did like that Bod was standing up for other kids that were being picked on.

Silas' rescue tactic is amazing. It not only saves Bod, but it freaks the hell out of everyone. I love it. The only bad thing is that Silas is slightly injured. It makes me wonder about the true extent of Silas' power.

  1. Interesting ... I wonder if you're right about the flowers not blooming because of Bod!

Love Silas ... he's such a great character!

  2. I thought that maybe the flowers blooming was connected to Bod too, but then I was thinking why would they just be blooming now, and not any other time in the last like 10 years since he's been there? And apparently it's been 80 years since they bloomed before... such a mystery!
