Anansi Boys Read Along Post 2

Fat Charlie Nancy's normal life ended the moment his father dropped dead on a Florida karaoke stage. Charlie didn't know his dad was a god. And he never knew he had a brother.
Now brother Spider's on his doorstep -- about to make Fat Charlie's life more interesting... and a lot more dangerous.

Warning: This post contains spoilers!!

The second section of Anansi Boys is where things really begin to go down. FC wakes up pretty hungover in bed with a girl who is not Rosie. (I loved that in the book she was described by her drink order: "It was vodka orange.") But naturally that's not the worse part. Before Daisy aka "vodka orange" can leave the apartment or even get fully dressed, FC is visit by his future mother-in law. A flustered FC introduced Daisy as his sister...cousin. Then there's a whole mess a crap about mother in law taking over the wedding planning and deciding to put FC's friend in relatives in the nosebleed section of reception. I really don't like her.

Spider has decided that helping means assuming FC's identity completely. I don't really understand how this works. But apparently everyone thinks that he's FC, and that he suddenly smells amazing. (?) He decides to pull a fast one on FC's jerky boss, which I'm thinking will come around to bite FC in the ass. (The wheels are in motion). He also sorta steals Rosie from FC for no other reason than he can. I don't really blame Rosie because she thinks that it's FC, but I still don't like her. Oh and she finally decided that it was time to sleep with FC (who is really Spider). Ugh. So mad about that.

So FC has finally had enough and goes back to Florida to have the old lady neighbors take care of things and get Spider the hell out of his life. I kind of think that they're voodoo ladies. They do their voodoo thing and FC ends up going to this other worldly place in a trance and finds all these enemies of his father who basically say that they don't want to help him. He finds an eagle lady who wants some kind of revenge and FC makes an unclear deal with her.

This section was more entertaining and you got a clearer picture of who the characters are. I'm not really pulling for anyone except the voodoo ladies. I like FC a little, but mostly feel bad for him because his life is going to shit because of Spider and not because of anything that he's done.

I have a feeling we'll see more of Daisy. I am hoping that she and FC get to know each other a little bit better. I still think that they seem well suited.

  1. So far as a whole I'm liking the book and of course having someone to talk about it is great.
